Poem 9
Independence

(irregular sonnet)

There was a town in my desert home
A City of gold and ancient stone.
So there I flagged by the sunlight
My tattered dress of blue and white.

And then it was I met the Witch
Who proudly and sure delivered a speech:
“You try to take this City from me
And I´ll throw you back into the sea!”

She turned around and went away
Not even waited to hear my say.
I felt so small and so alone
She had her friends, and I had none…

My Sleepless Knight, would you come down?
Please save my home, please save my town!
Her Endless Knight would have me expelled
She wants me down, my banner felled!

And then my Knight woke up the world
There was uproar, offenses were hurled
They talked and fought and came to agree:
Half a city to her, half a city to me.

I had no time to be distressed
For in spite of that, they had professed
The land was mine, no more deceits.
I danced and sang up down the streets!

But even while I sang and danced
Bombs were falling, troops advanced.
The attack was fierce, but I was more.
I had a reason to battle for.

I could not lose,  or less I died
I did not have a place to abide…
And so I battled against the Witch
Against her friends, so high and rich.

So the fight went on, but it was in vain.
For I´d not go down! Not ever again!

I would not hide. I would not run!
I would not fear a knife or gun!

So my colors, my blue and white
Freely fluttered, all day and night
Telling the world, cease all the fray!
The Daughter of Zion has come to stay!
