Saci-Pererê ( Brazilian folklore)
Saci-Pererê (Brazilian folklore)
Out of the forest green
A devil dust comes,
And all of a sudden
Tis nowhere to be seen.
For a one-legged black youth,
with a wooden pipe puffing away,
Hath emerged from the gust of wind
Clad in a cap of a colour gay.
Always up to mischief
Hopping and frolicking to and fro.
No major harm will cause he,
This little prankster, this little thief.
Nevertheless, beware!
For the livestock he’ll set free,
And children’s toys he'll carry off,
Cunning work of a lad, called Saci.
If thou managest, however, to steal his cap,
Bright and red like the flame of fire,
Or makest him fall into a trap,
A wish Saci will gran thee.
