OF; OFF; ON; ONTO; ON THE LEFT/RIGHT OF; ON TOP OF; OPPOSITE; OUTSIDE; OUT; OVER; OWING TO

OF; OFF; ON; ONTO; ON THE LEFT/RIGHT OF

OF –1) Causa de uma ação.

Ex.: a) He died of cancer two years ago.

b) I’m tired oflistening to those small talks

2) Um entre muitos.

Ex.: a) I like Tom very much; his one of my best friends.

b) She was born in New Jersey, the second ofsix children in a Polish family.

3) Tema ou assunto de um livro, história, conferência, etc.

Ex.: a) My teacher spent half an hour describing the subject of the day.

b) I enjoyed very much Voltaire’s book of short stories.

4) Indicando posse.

Ex.: a) The house of the rising sun is a song which reminds me good old things.

b) I’d like to introduce Ted, an old friend of mine.

5) Como substância real de alguma coisa acabada.

Ex.: a) His house is totally made ofwood.

b) Bridges, to be resistant, must be made of good and hard materials.

6) Como termo idiomático significando caráter ou característica.

Ex.: a) How can you be so cruel? You seem to have a heart of stone.

b) Salazar became famous and known as the president with the heart of iron.

OFF – Neste caso temos ato de separação com ideiabi-dimensional.

Ex.: a) Carl spent most of his life working off shore.

b) Don’t eat that bread; it fell off the table.

ON – O mesmo sentido de ABOVE.

1)Por cima, sobre (tocando a superfície). UPON

Ex.: a) He was talking to me and the green parrot was there on his shoulder.

b) Please, pick up all the books you left on the table.

2)Refere-se também aos nomes dos dias.

Ex.:a) Let’s have a meeting onMondy to introduce the new staff.

b) I usually get very tired on Friday, may last workday.

3) Usada também com sentido parecido à preposição ABOUT, porém em um sentido geral não específico.

Ex.: a) My doctor prescribed a regimen on fruits, vegetables and small amounts of meat.

b) Those last five days were terrible. They had to survive on water and biscuits.

4) Usa-se também para qualificar partes do dia.

Ex.: a) She came to us on a warm afternoon and became part of the family.

b) Most people get quite lazy on Monday morning.

5) Para transportescoletivos.

Ex.: a) Sue goton the bus and found her favorite friend ready to school.

b) Everybody helped the old lady to get on the ferry boat.

6) Como resultado de alguma coisa.

Ex.: a) He lost his job on having an argument with the company director.

b) Lisa broke her arm on jumping from the wall to the ground. It wasvery high.

ONTO – Significa movimento em direção a uma superfície.

Ex.: a) Jonathan got home and put his umbrella onto his mother’s bed.

b) Stretching your legs onto the armchair like this is not good manners.

ON THE LEFT/RIGHT OF – Quer dizer que algo está imediatamente próximo a esquerda ou à direita.

Ex.: a) Let me show you Richard in this picture I took at the party; he’s the one on the leftof Mr. Thompson, the host.

b) Please, bring me that piece of paper on the right of the dictionary.
