Passemos a uma nova fase de preposições:
IN – INSIDE – IN ADDITIO TO – IN FAVOR OF – IN FRONT OF – IN SPITE OF – IN SUPPORT OF - INTO – LIKE – MINUS – NEAR – NEXT TO.
Grupo I
IN – INSIDE – IN ADDITIO TO – IN FAVOR OF – IN FRONT OF – IN SPITE OF
IN – No sentido geral designa posição no espaço e no tempo, além de funcionar também como demonstrador de estado, modo, etc.
1 – Partes de um dia, estações e anos.
Ex.: a) I leave work early in the afternoon.
b) In the late sixties the world started to witness the end of the Beatles’s
era.
2 – Áreas, números e idades aproximadas.
Ex.: a) Lucinete now works in a branch of one of Britain’s best-know department stores.
b) The maps we have available show working routes in the country-side
3 – Posição definida dentro de certos limites.
Ex.: a) The tour should be enjoyed on a lazy weekend when everything in the village is open and hopping.
b) According to researchers most accidents happen in the home.
4 – Descrevendo capacidade, interesse, etc.
Ex.: a) Are you interested in fishing?
b) I’m very strong in languages; it’s my favorite subject.
5 – Indicando uma circunstância pessoal temporária.
Ex.: a) Can you call Jerry for me? He’s the one in blue sweater and holding a drink.
b) After five years in love with each other, they decided to get married.
6 – Geralmente em obra de arte, referindo-se ao material do instrumento utilizado.
Ex.: a) I love Degas’s representation of the human face usually done in pastel.
b) Do your exercise in pencil so that you can correct it more easily.
INSIDE – Dentro; num período de.
1 – No interior, com definição tridimensional.
Ex.: a) You can check the papers; they’re all inside this small Box.
b) The old woman became breathless after hours inside the broken
elevator.
2 – De forma um tanto coloquial para definir períodos.
Ex.: a) Being realistic, I don’t expect this course to be finished inside six
months.
b) Jane doesn’t plan to start a new career now. She’s gonna have a baby
inside six months.
IN ADDITION TO – Além de; além do mais; além de que.
Ex.: a) He couldn’t refuse the director’s offer: $6.000 a month in addition to 5% share in all major events.
b) I loved the sale. In addition to a new suit a bought a pair of shoes
and a belt.
IN FAVOR OF - Estar de acordo ou favorável.
Ex.: a) Are you in favor of the lay-off announced for next month?
b) Most Cariocas are in favor of the creation of a new subway line.
IN FRONT OF - Precedente; em frente; na frente.
1 – O que precede
Ex. a) Carl is the tall guy wearing a bollard hat. In front of him is my son
Mike the youngest of the group.
b) I wanted to get the sit by the window but the little girl went in front of
me.
2 – Face a face; de frente para.
Ex.: a) There’s a barbershop in front of the gas station.
b) Pat hated Celia but the meeting forced them to sit in front of each
other.
IN SPITE OF - Possui o mesmo sentido que despite, porém menos formal. É, geralmente, seguida de um nome.
Ex.: a) In spite of a flat tire he could drive almost two kilometers to the next workshop.
b) Alex is a wonderful student. In spite of his mistakes in spelling he
has a fantastic vocabulary.
