Estudo das Preposições Inglesas ( com exercícios e respostas) - PARTE III - lição 11

Continuemos com as preposições restantes do grupo.

FOR ALL; FOR THE SAKE OF; FROM, FROM …TILL; UNTIL; UP TO

FOR ALL – Tem o mesmo sentido de DESPITE (apesar). Geralmente inicia uma frase e indica um esforço em vão.

Ex.: a)For all the e-mails I’ve been sending to her lately, she has not sent any reply.

b) For all the money you make in this business it won’t pay the huge

company’sdebt.

FOR THE SAKE OF – Em nome ou em benefício de alguém ou algo.

Ex.: a) He Said he only accepted the nomination for the sake of his people.

b) For the sake of your health you need to quit smoking immediately.

FROM – Esta preposição é uma das campeães em significados. É preciso muito cuidado ao trabalhar com ela. Quer dizer, entre outras coisas, Proveniente de, da parte de, desde, para longe de. Dá noção de causa, distância, posição, prevenção, etc.

1- Mostra o lugar de onde se iniciou a ação.

Ex: a) The man took the money from his pocket and gave it to his daughter.

b) I spent all morning reading the postcards and the pictures that my cousin sent

fromAustralia.

2- Designa a hora em que algo se inicia ou o tempo em que foi feito ou existiu pela

primeiravez.

Ex.: a) That vase is extremely valuable. It dates from the fifteenth century.

b) From this day on I promise never to offend you again.

3- A distância entre dois lugares.

Ex.: a) It’s easy to get to my house. It’s about 50 metersfrom that traffic light.

b) We don’t need to take a taxi. We’re just half kilometer from theairport.

4-Usada para mostrar os níveis de variação entre grandezas, em forma de preços ou

números.

Ex.: a) From R$ 4,00 to R$ 10,00 people can visit the city zoo.

b) Electricity bills have risen from 15% to 20% in 2005.

5 – Causa de uma ação ou estado.

Ex.: a) Happy for the first time in months, I was savoring the slow fall from

Consciousness.

b) Our car stopped twice this week from lack of gasoline.

6 – Mostrando a origem de alguém ou alguma coisa.

Ex.: a) My aunt comes fromFortaleza.

b) He met a very nice girl fromItaly

7 – Denotando: Separação. Algo ou alguém foi removido ou levado embora.

Ex.: a) Don’t take all the cookies from the cupboard. I’ll be hungry when I

get home tonight.

b) Five from fifteen is ten.

8 – Quando se refere a um material específico, não necessariamente o principal.

Ex.: a) Feijoada is a Brazilian dish made from all parts of pork meat.

b) She’s wearing wonderful high heels made from leather and velvet.

9 – Transformação. Mostra a mudança no estado de alguém ou algo.

Ex.: a) Sue fell in love and changed from being the sad girl I always new.

b) Jerry did a good job and was promoted from junior to a senior

position in marketing.

10- Quando queremos considerar uma situação antes de a julgarmos ou decidir sobre

ela, usamos a preposição from.

Ex .: a) From whatGeorge had said, it was obvious that they would love

Alexandra deeply.

b) From looking at your face, I would say you’re very happy with your

new boyfriend.

11- Mostra a diferença entre duas pessoas ou coisas.

Ex.: a) I can’t live in common with a person whose dreams are so different

from mine.

b) Japanese people are very similar. Sometimesit’simpossibletotell

onefromtheother.

12- Usada para mostrar a posição de algo comparado a outras coisas ou o ponto de

vista de alguém ao considerar uma questão.

Ex: a) He knows very well this issue. He’s talking from his own

Experience.

b) I’m speaking from the top of the EmpireState, where I can have a

wonderful view of the city.

13- No sentido de proteção, mostra aquilo contra o que alguém está tentando se

proteger.

Ex.: a) She had constantly protected her sisters from the beatings of her

uncle.

b) After two hours looking for a place, they found shelter from the

storm under a large tree.

14 - Como prevenção, usada para mostrar o que não se tem permissão de fazer ou

conhecer ou aquilo que deixou de acontecer.

Ex.: a) I’ll thank you forever if you promise me to keep this from going

public.

b) After the revolution he was banned from visiting his motherland for

fiveyears.

FROM… TILL / UNTIL – Representa: duração entre duas determinadas situações.

Ex.: a) My son studied at this University from 1987 till his graduation in 1992. b) He remained in Francefrom his first trial till his execution.

Obs.: Pode-se substituir TILL por UNTIL ou UP TO sem alterar o sentido.

Ex.: That book is very interesting. From the moment I began to read it up to the last page it took me no more than 5 days.

2 – Escolha a melhor preposição.
