Dez formas de falar “morrer”em Inglês. (B1 or above)

É curioso o fato de existir tantas formas para expressar a ideia de morte no Inglês. Mostrar-vos-ei algumas dessas maneiras. Conquanto sejam sinônimos, as seguintes expressões são usadas em contextos específicos, isto é: Em situações de desamparo; outras em situações humorísticas; outras possuem caráter literário e são raras no Inglês falado...

Para melhor elucidar essas diferenças, usemos os termos comumente encontrados no dicionário Longman para melhor classificar as expressões. Eles são:

Literary _ Especialmente usados em livros, séries medievais e afins.

Humorous_ Usa-se quando se pretende soar engraçado.

Formal_ Usado em situações formais.

Slang_ Gíria

Informal_ Usado em situações informais.

1) To die = morrer

Essa é a palavra comumente usada na maioria dos contextos.

E.g. My father died four years ago.

2) To pass away = falecer

Usa-se quando se deseja evitar a palavra “morrer” ( to die)

E.g. As a result, your husband will not be entitled to any death grant when you pass away.

3) To meet your maker

E.g. Are you ready to meet your maker?

4) To breath one’s last

E.g. I love “ Vale do Ipê", and that’s where I’ll breathe my last.

5) To give up the ghost ( humorous)

E.g. The freight-train barreling towards him, his foot still stuck, no time, he decided to give up the ghost.

6) To shuffle off this mortal coil ( literary)

Obs. Não se usa essa expressão para consolar alguém.

E.g. I really want to see the Coliseum before I shuffle off this mortal coil.

7) To kick the bucket( sometimes used humorously) = bater as botas

Obs. Atenção, pois o significado literal dessa expressão é “chutar o balde”, porém na língua Inglesa, o significado é “morrer, bater as botas”.

E.g. Didn't you hear? He kicked the bucket. Had a heart attack, I think.

8) To buy the farm( slang)

Obs. Usa-se especialmente quando alguém morre repentina ou violentamente.

E.g. Chuck Lindberg later recalled the hazards of lugging a tank that carried seventy-two pounds of... napalm... under twelve hundred pounds of pressure... "It was dangerous work. A lot of guys bought the farm trying that."

9) To decease ( formal)

E.g. the senator deceased last night.

10) To snuff it ( slang)

E.g. "I really felt like snuffing it right there, right then" -A Clockwork Orange
