Sundown

Helio was born on a cruel summer day. His parents were looking forward to seeing him for the very first time. At the noon on sharp he was already crying out; the only child. Since his childhood, he had wanted to be brought into focus. Everything had to be his way. Even though, he felt the loneliest child ever. He had the beauty, the money, the strength. His eyes shone, but his antisocial personality kept the world away. His cousins, Moony and Marshal were victims of his cruelty, selfishness and arrogance. As a student, he was the brasher one, but also the most intelligent one. In his birthday parties there were always lots of balloons and colorful lights. He had preppy clothes and he was treated like a prince. Some people tried to get closer to him, but that fifteen-year-old guy couldn’t take his big eyes away from the mirror hanging on his bathroom wall. He always wanted to be taller, stronger, richer… And his hellish vanity went upstairs, taking him further from the commoners. During his favorite season (it goes without speaking), he could enjoy the beaches – Long Beach was the one he liked most. He had a very strong connection with the sea. He was a great surfer and he bragged because of it. At his nineteenth birthday, he got a beautiful car from his father, which made him feel yet more powerful. He rolled around in it all that afternoon long. When he got home, he felt a stitch in his chest, but he didn’t care. As he opened the door, he gazed at a very bright light coming from the window. He came closer to it, feeling totally attracted by it. The sweat was dripping all over his face. His mother realized he had arrived and called out his name. No answer. Helio already knew that light, but it had never shone so much. He was looking ahead, but when he turned his eyes to the right, he didn’t see anything else. He felt desperate, but before he could scream, he felt a pain in his chest; this time it was harder and he fainted. There was he, in front of himself, lying on the ground, and the light of that punishing sun had gone.
