In 1534, the Portuguese Crown instituted the Hereditary Captaincy regime. The Captaincy of Pernambuco was handed over to the Portuguese nobleman Duarte Coelho, who took possession of his captaincy, disembarking, on March 9 , 1535, at the factory founded in 1516, between Pernambuco and Itamaracá. Shortly thereafter, he headed south to find a place to settle. He found a strategically ideal place, high up in the hills, where there was a small village called Marim , by the Indians, settling there the village that gave rise to Olinda.
A site protected by the height overlooking the sea, with a natural harbor formed by reefs, abundant water and fertile land , and easy to defend, according to the military standards of the time . The place was so pleasant, that, it is said, the name Olinda was given from a phrase said by Duarte Coelho: “Oh beautiful situation to build a village”. The day of Olinda's foundation is unknown; it is known that the town prospered so much that, in 1537, it was already elevated to the category of a village. On March 12, 1537, Duarte Coelho sent to the king of Portugal, D. João III, the Foral, donation letter describing all existing places and improvements in Olinda Village. On the beaches, the village was fortified for defense and from the top of the hills it expanded towards the sea, the port and the interior where the sugar mills were located.
With the extraction of brazilwood and the development of the culture of sugar cane, Olinda became one of the most important commercial centers in the colony, enriching it to such an extent that it competed with the Portuguese Court in luxury and ostentation. The urban layout of the village was configured, still in the 16th century, with the definition of the paths and the occupation of the main promontories by the religious. With the arrival of the first religious orders - Carmelites, in 1580, Jesuits, in 1583, Franciscans, in 1585, and Benedictines, in 1586, the catechization of the Indians was also carried out, of fundamental importance for the definitive conquest of the lands.
On February 16, 1630, the Netherlands invaded Olinda and conquered Pernambuco. Once the city was taken, the Dutch settled in the town and islands next to the port and abandoned Olinda. On November 24, 1631, the Dutch set fire to Olinda, after removing the noble materials from the buildings to build their houses in Recife, which begins to prosper under Dutch administration. On January 27, 1654, the Dutch were expelled and the slow reconstruction of Olinda village began.
AFTER 1654 - After 1654, the destination of Recife can no longer be changed, which now occupies that place before Olinda. Recife will be the headquarters, although unofficial, and Olinda, seconded, will slowly rebuild, no longer having the importance it had in those years before 1630. A mid-19th century map reveals a city, title obtained in 1676, still with the same dimensions as the old village. It is true that their religious houses have been reconstructed in a monumental way. The commercialism present in Recife and the rationality of that new relationship, in the light of the new world of the 16th and 17th centuries, finally won. Olinda has its future outlined in view of the growing importance of Recife. The historic center (current), in the mid-nineteenth century, was still surrounded by rural properties, the largest, the engenhos, mostly of dead fire, those of the lowland of Beberibe, and the smallest , the farms, on the banks of the River Beberibe and the sea.

It is the revival of the city. This transformation is felt in those houses close to the sea, where they are dressed in eclectic clothes and, with the renovation of the façades, they are modernized. What was restricted to areas close to the beaches will then walk to the other streets of the city. An urban transformation that gives new life to the old village. Drinking water, brought to the homes by the Santa Teresa Company, and electrification, denote the importance that the city is regaining. Soon, the urban train is replaced by electric trams, at the beginning of the 20th century.

THE HISTORY OF OLINDA CARNIVAL
The Olinda Carnival emerged in the early twentieth century. Its origin is directly linked to the emergence of carnival clubs, such as Clube Carnavalesco Misto Lenhadores (origin in 1907) and Clube Carnavalesco Misto Vassourinhas (origin in 1912). The tradition of doll parades, on the other hand, emerged in the early 1930s. It was in the year 1932 that the doll "Homem da Meia-Noite" went to the streets of the city for the first time to liven up the carnival.
Giant dolls
One of the main marks of Olinda's carnival is the parade of Bonecos Gigantes. Made of wood, paper and fabrics, these dolls are led through the streets of the city, cheering up the revelers. One of the best known and traditional dolls is the "Midnight Man". These dolls are representations of important historical personalities from Brazil and the world. Frevo
The street parades are animated with a lot of samba and frevo. Although it started in Recife, the frevo has been part of Olinda's carnival for several decades. It is the frevo that animates and spreads the revelers through the streets and slopes of Cidade Alta.
Popular festival
All carnivals over a million revelers participate in the popular festival. There are approximately 500 carnival groups that parade through the streets, mainly from the old center of Olinda. In addition to the carnival clubs, frevos clubs, blocks, maracatus, mobs, afoxés and caboclinhos take to the streets. The traditions of Olinda's carnival represent the purest mixture of cultural traits of the peoples who formed the Brazilian nation (black Indians and Europeans).
