Following the death of Queen Elizabeth, her son King Charles not only succeeded her as British monarch, but as monarch of 14 other Commonwealth realms, from Australia to Jamaica. Therefore, he became king and head of state for some 150 million people in the Commonwealth realms.

However, it is widely expected that a few of these countries could remove Charles as their head of state—Jamaica's Prime Minister Andrew Holness has said he intends for Jamaica to be fully independent, as have the leaders of Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, and other Caribbean nations. There are also growing republican (i.e., anti-monarchy) movements in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and elsewhere.

Under Queen Elizabeth's reign, 17 countries left the British monarchy—including, most recently, Barbados in 2021. Yet, as of now, none have left during King Charles's reign (yet). Here are the fifteen nations that King Charles reigns over as monarch:

1

Antigua and Barbuda

Independence from the UK: 1981

Royal history: The Wessexes visited Antigua and Barbuda in April 2022, and King Charles has been to the Caribbean nation once, in 2017. When he was there, he said in a speech, "It is so important to all of us in the Commonwealth that the future of this special region is both prosperous and secure; and that the remarkable strength of spirit for which the Caribbean is renowned, continues to thrive and to offer an example to us all."

Feelings about the monarchy: Gaston Brown, prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda, said he plans to hold a referendum in the next three years on whether or not they should remove the king as head of state.

"It does not represent any form of disrespect to the monarch. This is not an act of hostility, or any difference between Antigua and Barbuda and the monarchy," Browne told ITV News. "It is a final step to complete the circle of independence to become a truly sovereign nation."

Australia

Independence from the UK: 1901

Royal history: Queen Elizabeth II visited Australia 16 times during her reign, and there have been over 50 visits by a member of the royal family to the country. In 1983, then-Prince Charles and Princess Diana traveled to Australia and New Zealand with their son Prince William, which was recreated in season four of The Crown. In 2018, Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, visited; William and Kate have visited as well.

Feelings about the monarchy: In 1999, Australia had a republic referendum, and it was narrowly defeated. Following the death of Queen Elizabeth, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said now was not the time to have another referendum—but did not rule it out for the future.

Bahamas

Independence from the UK: 1973

Royal history: Prince William and Kate, then the Duchess of Cambridge, are the most recent royals to visit the country (pictured), in March 2022. King Charles has never visited in an official capacity, though he has vacationed in the Bahamas.

Feelings about the monarchy: Following the death of Queen Elizabeth, Prime Minister Phillip Davis said he will hold a referendum on becoming a republic. Ahead of William and Kate's visit in March, the Bahamas National Reparations Committee (BNRC) released a statement calling for reparations from the British royal family.

4

Belize

Independence from the UK: 1981

Royal history: Princess Margaret was the first member of the royal family to visit Belize, in 1958. King Charles has also never visited Belize, but Queen Elizabeth went twice during her reign, in 1985 (pictured) and 1994. Most recently, Prince William and Kate Middleton visited during their royal tour of the Caribbean earlier this year.

Feelings about the monarchy: The first stop of William and Kate's tour in Belize was canceled due to protests. In Belize, however, no referendum to remove King Charles is required—merely a 2/3rds vote in the House of Representatives. "Within our region, there is a definite push toward bringing home the head of state," Belize’s minister of constitutional and political reform Henry Usher told the Washington Post. "The rallying cry in the Caribbean is that the people are sovereign."

5

Canada

Independence from the UK: 1867 (Canada was the first "dominion" of the British Empire)

Royal history: King Charles's last official royal tour as Prince of Wales was to Canada—it was his 19th (!) official tour in the country. "Every time I come to Canada, and I’ve been here many times since 1970, a little more of Canada seeps into my bloodstream and, from there, straight into my heart," he said in 1996.

Feelings about the monarchy: Any change would require "amendment by unanimous consent" (agreement between the House of Commons, the Senate and all Canadian provinces)—which is unlikely to happen.

6

Grenada

Independence from the UK: 1974

Royal history: At the very last minute, Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex canceled their trip to Grenada that was planned as part of their Caribbean tour this past spring. King Charles has visited once, in 2019 (pictured).

Feelings about the monarchy: If the Wessexes' canceled visit is any indication, Grenada is joining its Caribbean neighbors in debating the removal of the monarchy. "There is a way of Caricom [Caribbean Community] members following each other," Grenadian journalist Linda Straker told Foreign Policy. "I will not be surprised at all if by 2024 we become a republic similar to Barbados."

7

Jamaica

Independence from the UK: 1962

Royal history: Prince William and Kate are the most recent royal visitors to Jamaica. During their trip, they drew protests, and Prince William gave a speech expressing his "profound sorrow" over slavery. Charles has visited Jamaica four times, including in 2008 (pictured).

Feelings about the monarchy: During William and Kate's visit, Prime Minister Andrew Holness told the royals, "We are moving on and we intend to attain, in short order, our development goals and fulfill our true ambitions and destiny as an independent, developed, prosperous country." Holness has said his country will transition to a republic before the 2025 general elections.

8

New Zealand

Independence from the UK: 1907

Royal history: There have been over 50 royal tours of New Zealand—Queen Elizabeth visited New Zealand on ten occasions; King Charles has visited nine times (pictured in 1981).

Feelings about the monarchy: "King Charles has long had an affection for Aotearoa New Zealand and has consistently demonstrated his deep care for our nation." Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said following Queen Elizabeth's death. "And so as one chapter closes, another begins."

While Arden has said she sees New Zealand (also called Aotearoa) becoming a republic in the future, "I don’t see it as a short-term measure or anything that is on the agenda anytime soon."

9

Papua New Guinea

Independence from the UK: 1975

Royal history: Papau New Guinea has seen a few royal visitors. The Queen visited three times, and King Charles has visited four times—once before the country became independent, and three times since (pictured in 1984). In 2012, when he visited for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee with Camilla, then Duchess of Cornwall, he said, "My wife, for whom this is a first visit, has for many years heard me talk about this wonderful country and its people; I am delighted that she finally has the chance to experience Papua New Guinea's warmth and beauty for herself."

Feelings about the monarchy: Following Queen Elizabeth's death, Papua New Guinea's leader asked King Charles to visit in 2025 to celebrate 50 years of independence—no referendum seems to be on the horizon.

10

Saint Kitts and Nevis

Chris JacksonGetty Images

Independence from the UK: 1983 (Saint Kitts and Nevis is the most recent British colony in the Caribbean to become independent.)

Royal history: King Charles has visited twice, in 1973 and 2019 (pictured). The most recent royal visit was Charles, in 2019; before that, Prince Harry visited in 2016.

Feelings about the monarchy: "The advancement of the decades has taught us that the time has come for St Kitts and Nevis to review its monarchical system of government and to begin the dialogue to advance to a new status, just as Trinidad, Guyana, Dominica and now Barbados have done," Prime Minister Shawn Richards said earlier this year.

11

Saint Lucia

Independence from the UK: 1979

Royal history: The Wessexes visited in 2022 as part of their Caribbean tour; Charles has been to the nation three times (pictured in 2019).

Feelings about the monarchy: Following the Wessexes' visit, former Prime Minister Allen Chastanet said, "I certainly believe, like many other people, the time has come to make that change in becoming a republic." Current PM Philip J. Pierre said, "The constitutional review is on, and I can tell you there is a strong argument that we should go that way."

12

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

Independence from the UK: 1979

Royal history: King Charles has visited once, in 2019 (pictured). Queen Elizabeth visited twice, and the most recent royals to visit are once again the Earl and Countess of Wessex.

Feelings about the monarchy: A referendum was held in 2009 to adopt a new constitution, but it was defeated. Last year, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves expressed his wish for all Caribbean nations to adopt a republican form of government. "It is my hope that, in my lifetime, all or most of the independent countries of CARICOM would move from a monarchial system to a republican one," he wrote.

This past summer, he proposed a referendum on removing the Queen as head of state—which could be put to a vote early next year.

Solomon Islands

Independence from the UK: 1978

Royal history: King Charles was the last royal to visit, in 2019 (pictured). While there, he gave a speech in Pijin, in which he said, in part, "Our Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have told me they have such good memories of their time visiting these islands." Before that, Prince William and Kate Middleton visited in 2012.

Feelings about the monarchy: At the United Nations general assembly following the Queen's death, Prime Minister Manasseh D. Sogavare shared, "Her Majesty will always be remembered as an inspiration, a figure of stability, dignity, and grace. May God bless King Charles III’s reign as Head of the Commonwealth and all Realm countries."

14

Tuvalu

Independence from the UK: 1978

Royal history: King Charles has never visited Tuvalu; Queen Elizabeth went once during her reign. The most recent royal tour was by Prince William and Kate Middleton in 2012 (pictured).

Feelings about the monarchy: Tuvalu had a referendum in 2008 on becoming a republic, but only 35% voted in favor. Last year, Tuvalu launched a review of its constitution.

United Kingdom

The UK came into existence in 1707, and Queen Anne was the first monarch of the new Great Britain. There's not ample space here to get into the nation's royal history or feelings about the monarchy, but it's (more than) likely King Charles will remain monarch of the United Kingdom throughout the entirety of his reign.
