Notes On Translation Written by Giljonnys Dias da Silva
Necessary Rules to Help You to Translate Correctly
When dealing with translation, it is necessary to pay much attention to the surrounding words which help context to clue about the meaning and structure of a new word, as well as to consider in details semantics and style aspects.
It is good to view that word order obey grammar rules in the act of translation, and that it must be taken into account before starting the translation process. Yet, another translation problem is how a Portuguese idiom or slang will be rendered into English, what makes difficult to find an equivalent which resembles or comes close to the meaning of original word. There are gains and losses in translation, and that the rendering of a full text in Portuguese obliges the translator to understand the following rules:
1. To read the whole text, sentence, phrase, idiom or slang.
2. To gaze on the context of words and idioms.
3. To check the grammar order of words.
4. To take into consideration semantics and style language.
5. To revise and adapt the translated work.
6. To be concerned for accuracy and fidelity in the translation process.
Quando eu era criança costumava brincar de cama de gato com as outras crianças.
When I was a child I used to play the cat’s cradle with other kids.
(Computer Translation: When I was child play of cat bed with the other children.)
Há certas medidas que você precisa tomar antes de comprar algo para não cair no conto do vigário depois.
There are measurements which are necessary to take so that you cannot be swindled later.
(Computer Translation: There are certain measures that you need to take before buying something later for not falling in the vicar's story.)
De acordo com a Declaração Universal dos Direitos Linguísticos, o indivíduo bilíngue não só tem o direito de usar e falar suas línguas, mas também de escrever em suas línguas.
According to the Universal Declaration of Linguistic Rights, a bilingual person has not only the right to use and speak his/her languages, but also to write in his/her languages.
(Computer Translation: In agreement with the Universal Declaration of the Linguistic Rights, the bilingual individual not only he/she is entitled of to use and to speak their languages, but also of writing in their languages.)
The Context of Translation
Analyzing context when translating means more than rendering words or ideas into another language. But what is really the context? The context is the set of words grouped together which appear within the same sentence or text with their semantic and stylistic usage. It is the context which provides the meaning to words.
As a study model about the context of words in the process of translation, here are the translations of the word caber as an example:
Caber: to fit, to be up, to be appropriate, to fit through
1. Esta calculadora não cabe em meu bolso. – This calculator will not fit into my pocket.
2. Cabe aos pais disciplinar aos seus filhos. – It is up to parents to teach their children.
3. O armário não vai caber pela janela. – The cupboard will not fit through the window.
4. Não cabe comentar isto novamente. – It is not appropriate to comment this again.
Under pragmatic and semantic aspects, the translator confronts with the choosing of words in order to translate written ideas and thoughts into another language. The verb caber used here as a demonstration was rendered into four translations that will only have meaning within the context, that is to say, a set of words or ideas which make thinking. Thus, it can be seen in this analysis that the translation is more than the rendering of ideas and words. It means rearranging and choosing lexical correspondents in the other language which will be best suited to be translated. The verb caber in the given example, and isolated from its context has the meaning of colocar, competir a, passar and ser apropriado.
